Nancy Nelms
Craighead County Clerk

The County Clerk is the official bookkeeper of the county and serves as the clerk for the county, quorum andprobate courts. The County Clerk serves as secretary of the Board of Equalization and records the minutes of their meetings. The County Clerk is the official voter registrar, issues marriage licenses and keeps a record of all firms in the county, which have incorporated and also is responsible for payroll records and accounts payable.
Nancy Nelms
Nancy Nelms is a lifelong resident of Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas.
She graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1975 with the last two years of school being at the Craighead County Fairgrounds.
While she was in high school she worked as a waitress at A’s Fish House.
Nelms went to work at the courthouse in an office called the Mental Health Association in 1976. It was funded by United Way. In October of 1978 she was borrowed by the county clerk’s office to help get the election books ready for the general election that was to decide whether Craighead County would be wet or dry. She started at the bottom of the ladder under Harold Thompson, the county clerk at that time. When he retired she worked her way up to chief deputy clerk under Jane Todd. When Jane retired in 1999, Nancy ran for the position of County Clerk.
At times through the years Nancy has had part-time jobs to supplement her income. Two of the places she worked were the Marine Gas Station and at the PSL Store formerly on Johnson Avenue.
Changes
Nancy has seen many changes since she started working for the county. She has worked with four county judges in the past. When she began work at the courthouse all of the offices were located there with the exception of the road department and the county jail was on the corner of Jackson and Madison.
Nancy is a single mother of one daughter that attends Jonesboro High School.
